Amsterdam Data Science (ADS) accelerates data science and artificial intelligence research by connecting, sharing and showcasing world-class technology, expertise and talent from Amsterdam on a regional, national and international level. Our research enables business and society to better gather, store, analyse and present data in order to gain valuable insights and make informed decisions. ADS brings together data science and artificial intelligence researchers from academia, industry, and government to share ideas, pursue research, and foster talent.

ADS is an initiative of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica, the University of Amsterdam, the Vrije University Amsterdam and connects internationally leading researchers in fields such as machine learning, information retrieval, knowledge representation, human computer interaction and large-scale data management. Research is carried out on the foundations of data science and AI, and applied to behavioural analysis, business, city analytics, energy, health and intelligence & security.

ADS has a vacancy for a Community manager to strengthen relations with current, and to identify new, Industrial Partners. The Community manager is expected to establish the standard of industry collaboration on data science and AI in the Netherlands and specifically for the Amsterdam region. The successful candidate is able to set up a broad cross-industry program to facilitate scientific partners in defining successful projects and obtaining funding, both for research and educational activities. Close collaboration is required with funding agencies and research facilities, to maximize synergy with existing programs. Taking initiative and bringing out-of-the-box solutions to the table are key characteristics. A solid understanding of data science and/or AI and a research track record in a data science or AI related field are desirable.

Job description

The Community manager in ADS will strengthen existing relations with industrial partners and continue to form new relationships. The Community manager will attract industry partners for joint research projects, will investigate the needs of the industry in the area of data science and AI, and will function as a bridge between industry and academia with regards to internships and education.

Typical industry collaboration programs of interest are run by funding agencies such as TTW, NWO, the EU and the eScience Center. These programs require cash and in-kind contributions from industrial partners. The Community manager will actively be involved in finding funding opportunities and in creating the conditions and connections required to be successful in funding applications. The Community manager is expected to bring in their own ideas and suggestions to setup and improve the organisation.

The organisation of events and meetings is core to the networking activities of the organisation. The Community manager will contribute to outreach, determining and implementing a social media policy, publishing a monthly newsletter, regularly posting on the website, and contributing to the support of the management team.

Other opportunities to strengthen relations with industry can be found in educational activities. Many commercial organizations indicate their interest in data science education and the connection with talent. At the same time, our scientific partners are highly interested in data that can only be found outside the walls of academic institutions. The Community manager is expected to create a sustainable line of activities related to the educational objectives of ADS. Close collaboration is expected with colleagues at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences on the development of a sustainable education model for data science and AI, and the development of a certification framework.
