Conference on Legal Innovation in Finance, Amsterdam 16 & 17 October 2008

Thursday, 16 October, 9:00 - Friday, 17 October 2008, 13:00 hrs.

This research workshop, organized by Enrico Perotti (Amsterdam and DSF) and John Armour (Oxford) has for theme the ‘legal dynamics' of financial contracting. We want to focus on particular historical passages in legal innovation associated with evolution in financial contracting the diffusion of transferable securities. The event brings together scholars from economics, law, and history. Specific themes are the evolution of limited liability in history, and the standardization of financial contracts in the late 19th century.

The conference is ‘blue sky' in orientation. It is intended to pool knowledge and share thoughts about these questions, aiming to learn from historical evolution to identify specific issues. Each panel will begin with scene-setting presentations by discussion leaders to sketch stylized facts and articulate some questions. The discussion will be fully led by the audience, who will be encouraged and empowered to elaborate some common analytic framework.

A special event on limited liability and securitization will be held jointly with the main sponsor, the Duisenberg School of Finance. The theme is related to understanding the assignment of liability in the securitization process which has been central to the recent financial crisis.
