Welcome to the Amsterdam School of Economics

The Amsterdam School of Economics offers several excellent master programmes in Economics, Econometrics, Actuarial science and Operations research & management and has a strong  emphasis on research. We are a school with about 110  academic staff and 2400 students.

ASE aims to  prepare students for a career in research or a leading position in the public or private sector. Its educational programme is based on the academic ideal of intertwined research and teaching. In addition to the regular master programmes, ASE also has a two-year research master, the Master of Philosophy in Economics (MPhil),  based in the Tinbergen Institute, which was recently (2005) highly acclaimed by an international  committee of excellent  academics, chaired by Prof. Dale W. Jorgenson (Harvard University).

Research programmes

ASE has a very strong emphasis on research and scores well in international rankings. ASE has nine high-performing research programmes working on the following themes: Econometrics (Prof. J.F. Kiviet), Operations Research (Prof. N.M. van Dijk), Equilibrium, Expectations & Dynamics (Prof. C.H. Hommes), Actuarial Science  (Prof. R. Kaas), The Transformation of Europe (macro- and international economics) (Prof. R.M.W.J. Beetsma), Human Capital (Labour and Education Economics /SCHOLAR) (Prof. J. Hartog), History & Methodology of Economics (Prof. J.B. Davis), Experimental and Political Economics/CREED (Prof. F.A.A.M. van Winden), Industrial Organisation, Competition Policies & Regulation (Hinloopen/Van Cayseele).

Publications

The research programmes  focus on different topics within the broad field of economics and econometrics and publish in top-level international economics journals such as American Economic Review, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Review of Economic Studies, Journal of Political Economy and Econometrica, as well as various  specialised  journals such as Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control, Labour Economics. This list of journals is not exhaustive.
